Culture Class: The Scandinavian Middle Ages

Sweden Mountains.jpg

The Scandinavian Middle Ages saw Sweden, Denmark and Norway in constant opposition and sometimes warfare until all the nations coombined to form the Kalmar Union under Queen Margrethe 1. This remarkable woman steered Scandinavia in her own right, a novelty for Europe. Saint Birgitta of Sweden was also a formidable medieval woman who was able to wield earthly, as well as spiritual, power. During this era, Scandinavia became part of Western Europe and set the stage for the nation states that would follow the Middle Ages.
