Scandinavian Pop Musik

Starts Apr 10
150 US dollars

Class Description

Ever heard of Eurovision—the Olympics of pop music? Seen the Netflix film with Will Ferrell? The nearly 70-year-old song competition launched the careers of numerous Nordic pop icons, including the Swedish power group, ABBA! Of course, the Nordic countries are crazy about it, and our resident "Eurovangelist" Ethan Bjelland Hagberg thinks you should be, too! In this course, we'll take a look at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel, Switzerland, through a Nordic lens. In the first weeks of this six-part course, we'll introduce Eurovision as a whole—the history, the rules, the controversies—and then we'll dive into the Nordic nations themselves and help you prepare to enjoy the big event on May 17, whether you watch by yourself at home or with friends or a Eurovision viewing party. Playlists, videos, ballots, banter with other participants, and get inside knowledge on your favorite Nordic acts. Half the fun is ranking your favorites and comparing your results with friends and family, so what better way to get to know the contest this year than with a group of fellow Scandiphiles? Whether you're new to the contest, you've watched one or two grand finals, or you're a Eurovision nerd yourself, this course promises to be a sparkly, campy, schlager-filled cultural experience, celebrating a wild and heartwarming annual tradition for millions of viewers worldwide. 6:00pm-7:30pm April 9 — What is Eurovision? April 16 — Weird Rules & Controversies NO class on April 23 April 30 — Iceland, Norway, Denmark (history, stats, national final) May 7 — Finland, Sweden, Estonia (History, stats, national final) May 14 — Semi Final 1 & Getting Ready for Saturday - OPTIONAL SPECIAL FRIDAY — May 16 — Semi Final 2 & Ballots (this extra day is included in this course's price. Your friends who don't take the course can sign up for this single SLI culture class - called "Eurovision: Semi-Finals" and join you!) May 21 — Post Eurovision Wrap-Up & Discussion
