NOR: Intermediate-Advanced Conversation
Class Description
Enjoy guided conversation in Norwegian on Wednesdays at Leif Erikson Hall! This fall season, our topic will be the Holiday season and Norwegian Christmas traditions. We'll watch one or two episodes of the hit Netflix rom-com Hjem til jul each week to anchor our discussion. Additional texts, conversation prompts, and weekly discussion worksheets will be provided by the instructor. Hjem til jul focuses on the dating antics of Johanne, a nurse in her thirties, the only single person in her family, who has lied about having a date for Christmas Eve dinner. We'll watch two seasons, each with six short half-hour episodes. The acclaimed series is rich in contemporary Norwegian dialogue (Oslo bokmål, some western dialects, and a bit of Swedish and Danish), new and old traditions, and is set in the beautiful town of Røros, Norway's historic copper-mining town. Students will be asked to watch the assigned episodes each week and prepare to discuss general thoughts and guided discussion prompts, so we can have a rich discussion about the show and related topics that come to mind. Though there is some reading and an opportunity to write, the central goal is to practice speaking, to understand more spoken Norwegian and dialects, and to have a great time doing so! This course is intended for those who have finished Sett i gang 1 & 2 or who are looking to challenge themselves to speak more. CEFR B1 level or higher. The series, Hjem til jul, contains some coarse language and mature content related to sex and sexual relationships. The Leif Erikson Hall is in Ballard: 2245 NW 57th St, Seattle, WA 98107. There is free parking in the Banner Bank parking lot next door. Go through the entrance of the Leif Erikson Hall and up the stairs to find the class.

After that, their options are as follows below. STUDENTS WITHDRAWING FROM OR CHANGING CLASSES If a student wants to leave a class, there are 4 possibilities open to them: 1) Move to another class (available up to and including the 3rd class day) 2) Receive a tuition credit from SLI, prorated if applicable. 3) Receive a full or partial refund, as described below (available up to and including the 2nd class day). 4) Donate the tuition to SLI (always available). DETAILS (to implement any of these options, please call 425-773-5370 or write to admin@scanlang.org) 1) Move to another class. You may move to a different class (even to a different language!) up to (and including) the 3rd class as long as the instructor of your new class agrees. After the 3rd class, this option is no longer available. Moving to Another Class: Tuition Differences. If the New Course costs MORE: the student will pay the difference between the amounts. If the New Course costs LESS: SLI will apply the difference to a future class, issue a refund for it, or the student can donate it to SLI. 2) Apply the tuition to a later class. You may request that SLI keep your tuition and apply it toward another class in the future. When you take the later class, please do not book online. Instead, contact SLI and tell us which class you want to apply your credit to. 3) Receive a refund. Contact SLI for a refund before (but NOT including) the 3rd class day to completely withdraw from a class, and you will be issued a full refund minus a minimal processing fee (i.e. you will have 2 classes to decide whether you want to stay or withdraw). 4) Donate. If you wish to donate the money to SLI, let us know and we will issue you a receipt. Remember that donations are tax-deductible. We thank you! COURSE CANCELLATION This will occur if enrollment is too low. We will notify you, and you can decide which option you want. No processing fees will be withheld - you get back all of what you paid.
